Oksasen Puutarha carries out extensive product development both independently and in cooperation with industry partners. Collaboration with Dutch seed breeders began as early as the 1990s and has since become an established part of the company’s operations. The company also actively follows technological developments in the sector. In line with this, experiments with ozonation for water purification were launched at Oksasen Puutarha’s Turku facility in 2021.

The aim of collaboration with seed breeders is to identify more sustainable varieties for existing products as well as to develop entirely new products and varieties to introduce to the market. Trial cultivation in Finland is particularly important for seed breeders because growing conditions, especially regarding light levels, differ significantly in northern greenhouse regions compared to Central Europe.

As part of its product development work, Oksasen Puutarha has, among other things, launched Finland’s first sweet frisée lettuce. For rosemary, testing has identified a high-quality seed that thrives in Finland, allowing the product to be grown entirely in-house. This helps avoid potential pesticide risks associated with imported plant cuttings.
